Besançon: Avenue de l'Observatoire

Strategies: divert-through-traffic

Avenue de l’Observatoire is one of the radial arterials connecting the ring road (Rocade N57) to the city center. In 2002, the street that crosses the southern part of the University Campus TEMIS was closed to through traffic by installing a modal filter with retractable bollards. This way, inbound and outbound through traffic is diverted via alternative routing along the D70 Route de Gray and Av. de Montboucons. The buses on the frequent L3 line share this 1 km segment with local traffic accessing the campus. The modal filter was upgraded to include a protected bike channel in the second half of the 2010s, when the entire L3 route was upgraded to a Bus à Haut Niveau de Service (BHNS - Bus with a High Level of Service).
