Strategies: intersections

The intersection of Via Sargozza, a major radial thoroughfare leading into the city center, and the ring boulevard at Piazza di Porta Saragozza was progressively redesigned between the 1980s and the early 2000s to simplify its management and prioritize the trunk bus lines along Via Saragozza. In its current configuration, a short bus-and-taxi-only segment (A1) running under the old city’s gate serves as the equivalent of a queue-jump transit lane (H1-H2) and also simplifies intersection management by suppressing two left-turn movements at the main intersection. Thanks to the presence of an inbound contraflow transit lane on Via Saragozza, a third left-turn movement accommodates minimal local traffic from Viale del Risorgimento. Outbound traffic via Saragozza is diverted to an ancillary intersection at the northern edge of the square, while inbound traffic should follow a more circuitous route via Via Foscolo and Via Frassinago. The presence of the limited traffic area (ZTL) along the section of Via Saragozza within the former city walls further reduces traffic volumes to and from that leg of the intersection.
