Eugene (OR): 11th Avenue

Tools: f1-f2g1-g2

Strategies: curb-friction

Eugene’s BRT showcases several innovative and unorthodox solutions to prioritize its EmX bus service. On a 300m (1,000 ft) section of 11th Avenue between Hilyard Street and Mill Street, which is otherwise a rather typical one-way downtown arterial, buses run on an alternate-direction contraflow bus lane on the southern edge of the street. Conflicts with lateral streets and driveway access are managed via lateral-street-only stops, while short left-turn lanes for general traffic are provided in two locations by bending the bus lane. At the eastern end, an island platform bus stop serves Hilyard (EmX uses special buses with doors on both sides), providing an overtaking location before another alternate-direction stretch further east, although in a center-running position (B4). Frequencies on the EmX top are 10 minutes on weekdays, and lane use is managed with dedicated transit traffic lights.
