Strategies: intersectionsdivert-through-traffic

Piazza Ludovico Antonio Muratori is a square along one of the main axes leading into Florence's city center from the North. In the second half of the 2010s, the T1 tramway line was built, and this traffic node was redesigned to accommodate it. To simplify signal cycles and fit within the existing space, a left-turn staging lane was provided for northbound traffic, to the right of the lane for straight movements from the south and to the left of the staging lane for straight and right-turn movements from Viale G. Lami. This median left-turn lane provides a left-turning lane for northbound vehicles coming from the south and an indirect through itinerary for westbound traffic from viale Lami to viale Richa. The merging of the two flows upstream of the intersection is managed via a lateral-street yield.

Prior to the late 2010s redesign, this six-leg traffic node was already simplified between the late 1970s and the early 1980s by suppressing eastbound through movements between viale G. Richa and viale G. Lami, and left turns for southbound traffic from via C. Guasti to via Pagnini.

The reorganization of this traffic node is part of a broader neighborhood-level circulation redesign that accompanied the construction of the T1 tram line. Notably, the southbound general traffic flow is interrupted at Piazza Muratori and diverted to via Romito to the west by reversing the direction of viale G. Richa. This circulation setup frees up space to install two dedicated tram lanes under the existing railway viaduct at Statuto station and reduces through traffic along the entire Gianni-Guasti-Statuto axis, making it possible to reduce vehicular lanes from two to one in each direction.
