Strategies: priority-corridorsintersectionsdivert-through-traffic
The relatively narrow cross-sections of the streets converging at the node—ranging from approximately 15 to 24 metres wide, or the equivalent of two to five narrow traffic lanes—make it difficult to accommodate all turning movements, particularly left turns, alongside dedicated transit lanes and boarding islands. To simplify intersection operations and preserve space for transit priority, several through movements and left turns are rerouted via indirect itineraries.
In particular, traffic from Klosbachstrasse heading toward Zollikerstrasse and the Bellevue area via Kreuzbühlstrasse is diverted along an indirect right–left–right one-way, two-lane route via Zeltweg and Merkurstrasse. This arrangement frees space for a queue-jump lane for tram line 8 along the final approach on Klosbachstrasse. Similarly, inbound traffic from Forchstrasse bound for Kreuzbühlstrasse is rerouted along the same itinerary, allowing additional staging space for outbound traffic from Utoquai and Zeltweg directed toward Kreuzbühlstrasse and Forchstrasse, while maintaining dedicated side-running transit lanes.
This configuration forms part of a broader circulation strategy that prevents through traffic from spilling onto local streets while prioritizing movements along major transit corridors through the reduction and simplification of signalized intersections.
